2011 Mini Cooper S Countryman – First Look

When you take a first look at the new 2011 Countryman, there’s no doubt it’s a Mini. Same upright windshield. Same short hood. Same shape to the headlights. Look a little closer, though, and you’ll see that it’s an all-new car that rides a little higher than a standard Mini. Moreover, it’s quite a bit larger, with a wheelbase stretched by 5.1 inches and an overall length that has increased by 15.7 inches.

What’s that get you? Well, you can now realistically carry four people in a Mini, something that really wasn’t possible before. And there’s room for a good amount of luggage behind the folding rear seats, which slide fore and aft to meet your particular needs. With the seats in the up position, there’s 12.2 cubic feet of cargo space in back, a reasonable amount. With those seats folded, this Mini becomes a handy wagon with 41.1 cubic feet of cargo capacity—enough space for a couple of mountain bikes.

Although this new Mini Countryman will go on sale this fall in Europe, U.S. sales will begin early in 2011, perhaps as early as January. What’s more, when this U.K.-built Countryman goes on sale in the U.S., it will likely have another name. Our best guess is that it will be called the Traveler, a name that used to be applied to the old Morris Minor station wagons that also came from England.

2011 Ford Explorer First Look

New York Auto Show

Ninety-six percent of people polled by Ford know the name Explorer, says company president Mark Fields. And Ford expects the glory of its all-new 2011 Ford Explorer to dig those last few heads from the sand.

In lieu of a traditional auto show unveiling, the Dearborn automaker is conducting a massive digital, in-your-Facebook assault to reveal its completely redesigned midsize SUV. The 2011 Explorer has traded in its body-on-frame design for unibody construction, is 30 percent more fuel-efficient than the outgoing V6 model and offers numerous safety and technology advances, some of which are world-first achievements.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

New York Auto Show

The title of this piece, which is to be posted just short of halfway through year 2010, is "First Look." But, truth be told, we got our literal first look at the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee (JGC) back in late 2008 in a design dome at Chrysler's Auburn Hills, Michigan, headquarters. This was in preparation for the vehicle's public unveiling at the 2009 New York Auto Show. Let's just say our first peek at the new Jeep was long ago enough that the shirt we wore that day doesn't really us fit anymore (for reasons we needn't explore in this forum).

2011 BMW X1

The little BMW with big potential

It's been a decade since BMW entered the SUV/crossover market with its X5, creating its own niche with what it describes as the 'Sports Activity Vehicle'. In that time, the X Series family has become a major part of BMW's line - these vehicles now account for a fifth of all BMW sales, so it's no surprise the firm is looking to expand on the theme.

VOLT Electric Chevrolet – Concept

2011 Audi A7 Sportback

Emotion-packed design, sporty character and innovative technology: Audi is targeting a new market segment with the Audi A7 Sportback. The large five-door model with the dynamically accentuated rear end brings together the best of three worlds: the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.

The Audi A7 Sportback is pure high-tech. Its body is very lightweight thanks to numerous aluminum components. The elegant interior shows a craftsman's level of workmanship. The four V6 engines combine refined power with groundbreaking efficiency. The 3.0 TDI with 150 kW (204 hp) and multitronic has CO2 emissions of just 139 grams per kilometer (223.70 g/mile). The sporty chassis comes with new solutions, such as electromechanical power steering. When it comes to assistance and infotainment systems, the luxury-class coupe exhibits all of the innovative power expected of Audi.

NASDAQ Loves Tesla

In the first U.S. automotive Initial Public Offering of stock since Ford in 1956, Tesla’s IPO on Tuesday, June 29, yielded more than $200 million from a sale of 11.88 million shares. The stock opened at $19 a share, already 12 percent above the offer price of $17. It closed the next day at $24, having reached as high as $30.42.

The Blue Oval Moves Upmarket

It's easy to spend Lincoln money on a Ford these days. And we're not just talking about the Shelby GT500. The Taurus SHO, with Ford's premium 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, starts at $38,545 and quickly reaches Lincoln MKS territory, though the EcoBoost MKS base price is some 10-large higher than the SHO. The top of seven trim levels for the F-150 is the Platinum edition, designed to take the place of the failed Lincoln Mk LT pickup. The F-150 Platinum was originally designed to be a new Lincoln pickup, until Ford decided not to make an extra truck grille.

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

2010 New York Auto Show Coverage

If you followed our coverage of the 2010 Detroit Auto Show a few months back, you know Cadillac has a working knowledge of the copy/paste function, as demonstrated by the CTS-V Coupe -- essentially a CTS-V Sedan with Coupe bodywork. Not surprisingly, the formula is much the same for the 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon debuting in New York.

As with the CTS-V Coupe, everything forward of the A-pillars was lifted straight from the CTS-V Sedan and mated to the Cadillac Sport Wagon's body. Not everything is the same, of course. The show special you see here features a new rear fascia with a special roof-edge spoiler and integrated third brake light, all of which are unique to the concept and could see production in the future. The car is finished in the same Midnight Silver paint as the Sixteen Concept, augmented by special Liquid Silver wheels and a Black Chrome grille.
Beneath the melded bodywork beats a familiar heart. The CTS-V Sport Wagon is endowed as expected with Cadillac's wicked 556-horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that makes 551 pound-feet of torque. It's fitted with a true dual-exhaust system and backed up by either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Power flows to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential, and the 19-inch wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires.

An independent front and rear suspension keep the CTS-V Sport Wagon in tune with the tarmac, in concert with Cadillac's Magnetorheological adjustable shocks. Brembo brakes are fitted to all four corners, with six-piston calipers gripping 15-inch rotors up front and four-piston calipers clamping onto 14.7-inch rotors in the rear.
